Hierarchy of Government
The people in the Kingdom of Ghana were lead by a King who had absolute power. His lead religious ceremonies, judged during criminal trials, and appointed leaders of towns and advisors. The next king was appointed by hereditary. The King’s sister’s son would follow him in the role of leadership. The next highest in Government was the King's advisors; they were also known as the Council of Elders and advised the King when he needed. Next was the appointed leader of the city or village. They were required to take care of taxes for the area and pay a tribute to the king. Lastly, the normal people, they had no political power. None of the power that was appointed to the king changed the class of the extended families. You could marry anyone you wanted but would have to pay the piece if they had a lower political class than you.
